Les Miserables Summary at a Glance
After stealing a loaf of bread, Jean Valjean spends nineteen years in prison. Hes plagued afterwards by a suspicious police inspector whose name is Javert. At the end of the novel, Valjean and his adopted daughter Cosette finally find peace after facing much hardship and trials.
Valjean attempts to steal some silver candlesticks from a priest, after his released from prison. However, the priest gives Valjean the candlesticks as a gift so he can start his new life and to keep him from being arrested.
Valjean is elected the mayor of a small town and becomes a wealthy manufacturer. But hes forced to flee when Javert finds him and grows suspicious later.
Valjeans adopted daughter Cosette falls in love with a young revolutionary whos injured in the war. Valjean takes him to safety through the sewers and he afterwards continues to be troubled by his past until the day he dies.
