At the end of the novel, Valjean and his adopted daughter Cosette finally find peace after facing much hardship and trials. Valjean attempts to steal some silver candlesticks from a priest, after his released from prison. However, the priest gives Valjean the candlesticks as a gift so he can start his new life and to keep him from being arrested. Valjean is elected the mayor of a small town and becomes a wealthy manufacturer. But hes forced to flee when Javert finds him and grows suspicious later. Valjeans adopted daughter Cosette falls in love with a young revolutionary whos injured in the war.
